Replacing your roof this spring? We are and went through 7 different roofers to get bids. We learned a lot about the changes roofing materials have gone through over the past 10-15 years. We have decided to use the 'peel-n-stick' stuff over the entire roof. Typically this stuff is required where there are seams in the wood structure that covers the house. Houses built today have the roofing structures made up of sheets of plywood, not our house (built in 1923). We have 1X6's covering our house. Current code says that we do not have to use the 'peel-n-stick' stuff, but rumor has it that the code is going to change soon, so we are going to go with it. It should keep us dry if our shingles get blown off. Instead of going with a ridge vent, we are opting for solar attic fans. We also got permission from Construction Services to use shorter nails on the overhanging roof edges. Meaning, that we won't see nails that penetrate all the way through the roof. Brushing up against those has been painful in the past. The practice is forbidden in the Historical Area and because we have a 'historical home' we are being given the same opportunity to have a clean looking view when looking up.

I am so glad Construction Services will allow shorter nails. When I put my roof on - about 10-12 years ago - they wouldn't budge. Result is that I have nails sticking out all over the roof of my front porch. UGLY!
