TPD conducted Traffic Enforcement today at Broad and Nebraska Ave. The intent is to teach drivers about the new ‘Pull Over’ law.

The rules are the following when you come upon a vehicle with active emergency lights:

If you are on a single travel lane road, you must slow down 15 miles under the posted speed.

If you are on a multiple travel lane road, if it is safe to do so you must pull into another travel lane. If it is not safe to do so, then you must drop your speed 10 miles under the posted speed limit.

While TPD is not ticketing drivers for failure to pull over today, they will ticket you for any other driving violations they witness. You will receive a warning about the ‘Pull Over’ infraction.

New TPD Assignments in DII : Every year TPD goes through a "Shift Bid Process" to allow the officers to move around within the Tampa Police Department. The outcome will go into effect towards the end of January and at the same time some officers are retiring. I would like to take a moment to extend our appreciation to the following retiring officers for their years of service:
Sgt. Julie Massucci who has been working the night shift on Cycle B. Sgt Massucci has been a pleasure to work with and you could normally find her parked somewhere in our 'hood filling out paperwork when she was not actively working a call. By taking the active role of being visible in our area, I am sure that she deterred several crimes.
Sgt. Linda Mitchell has been in charge of the Cycle A SAC (Street Anti-Crime) Squad and has been very proactive in keeping the Hookers at bay. She called me many times to keep me informed on the under cover operations that were being done to discourage this type of activity in our area.

We are also loosing the following officers to other districts and are demanding to have them back at the earliest possible moment: Sgt. Mark Delage, Sgt. Kenny Norris, Sgt. Walt Sams
Each of these officers have worked hard since coming to our area to earn our trust and respect. They have developed many relationships with the residents that have allowed for a renewed sense of cooperation with TPD in our neighborhood. Their ability to listen has been refreshing. They have also showed leadership skills while maintaining control in very stressful situations.

Being a Police Officer is usually a thankless job and I would encourage you to take a moment to thank the officers that you see patrolling our streets and responding to your calls for service. Each officer is required to rapidly move from one situation to another from time to time. Sometimes the associated stress levels are worlds apart, but the officer is expected to adjust quickly. Their adrenaline levels may need some time to catch up and they have 'bad days' just like the rest of us. Unlike most of the us, they are putting their lives on the line each time they report to work and deserve our appreciation for doing that. So please join me in saying 'Thank you" to all of the Officers that work our area.

The Holidays are upon us and the economic climate is not good, that is going to cause crimes to increase. Please report any & all suspicious activities and keep a watch on your neighbors. This came in from an email this afternoon:

Today, between 12:00-13:30 a home on the 7000 N. 12th Street block was broken into, (near Hamilton). The burglars kicked in the front door. There were AT LEAST two people involved, maybe more.

They stole; a .38 Black Ruger Revolver and ammo to go with it, jewelry, flat screen TV, DVD player, checkbook, Christmas gift, and, etc.

If anyone saw anything unusual in this area around this time please contact TPD at 231-6130. The officer at the scene urged neighbors to call if they see anyone who appears out of place, please call.

If you are planning on attending Holiday celebrations somewhere else during the next few weeks, please know that TPD is giving Holiday Presents to any driver that fails to pass their DUI checkpoints that will be floated around our area. So be safe and have a designated driver or be the designated driver. They have also increased Traffic Patrols along Hillsborough, Nebraska and Florida Aves looking for speeders and red light runners.

A reminder message from TPD:
While driving around in neighborhoods, I have noticed an increase of people throwing away large TV boxes! Right now, HD TV's are so easy to carry because they are light weight, they are a burglars favorite item to steal, of course in addition to jewelry & game systems & CD's. Don't make their shopping easier! Do not advertise the new electronics in your home by having the boxes in plain view on the street. Pass the word. Thanks

TPD Roll Calls tomorrow at 1230 E. Comanche Ave, home of Jim Kwid. One roll call will take place at 2pm and the latter one will be at 7pm. Jim Kwid is hosting a 'Potluck Dinner' following the 7pm Roll Call. Please park at the empty lot across the street to allow the officers to park their patrol vehicles on the street.
